Harold "Grandpa" Stout sums up his philosophy on
life: "One hundred years from now, it will be of little
consequence whether or not I have owned a big car, a luxurious
home or was a professional success, but the world may be
different because I was important in the life of a
child." |

His name is Harold Stout, but to everybody at The Lighthouse
Learning Center, he's "grandpa."
Stout,
91, who retired from Consumers Power Co. in 1984, is the star of the
center. Grandpa prepares and serves lunch for the kids and provides
snacks before most leave.
He
dons colorful aprons over his royal blue golf shirt with the
learning center's lighthouse insignia on it as he goes about his
volunteer duties.
Grandpa
sits in a kitchen chair giving high-fives, or makes faces at the
kids and consoles them if they have minor hurts.
"
One mother wrote a Christmas card to say if her son doesn't get a
high-five from me, he will cry all the way home," said Stout,
who commuted daily from his home in Royal Oak for 18 years before
moving into the area.
Grandpa has a passion for loving kids and serving
them through example and love. |
